José Luis Cuevas

José Luis Cuevas nació en 1934 en las inmediaciones del centro de la Ciudad de México. A la corta edad de 10 años ingresa como alumno irregular a la Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado “La Esmeralda”. Dibujante desde 1940. En 1947 inicia sus primeros grabados y desde entonces, ha continuado su trayectoria como dibujante, grabador, pintor y escultor. A los veinte años de edad la revista neoyorquina Times prestó interés en entrevistarlo. Creador del libro “The World of Kafka and Cuevas” junto a Franz Kafka, por encargo de la Editorial Falcon Prest (Filadelfia, 1957). Amigo del escritor Jorge Luis Borges desde que se conocen en un viaje a Argentina en 1959. En 1970, el escritor Octavio Paz le dedicó el poema Totalidad y Fragmento. Sus dibujos, litografías, serigrafías y grabados han dado la vuelta al mundo. Los grabados expuestos del artista forman parte de la colección privada de Galería Vórtice.


José Luis Cuevas was born in 1934 near the center of Mexico City. At the young age of 10, he entered the National School of Painting, Sculpture and Engraving “La Esmeralda” as an irregular student. Draftsman since 1940. In 1947 he started his first prints and since then, he has continued his career as a draftsman, engraver, painter and sculptor. At the age of twenty, the New York Times magazine took an interest in interviewing him. Creator of the book “The World of Kafka and Caves” with Franz Kafka, commissioned by Editorial Falcon Perst (Philadelphia, 1957). Friend of writer Jorge Luis Borges since they met on a trip to Argentina in 1959. In 1970, the writer Octavio Paz dedicated the poem Totality and Fragment. His drawings, lithographs, serigraphs and prints have gone around the world. The exposed prints of the artist are part of the private collection of Galería Vórtice.
